The ministry of Passaggio

PASSAGGIO is an evangelical publishing ministry whose purpose is to provide sound and strong Christian literature for the edification and the growth of God’s people in Italy. For spiritual, historical, and cultural reasons, such literature is woefully lacking in Italy, with painful consequences for a struggling evangelical minority in dire need of a theological and spiritual reformation.

The themes dear to PASSAGGIO’s heart are the preaching of the gospel of God’s sovereign grace, the commitment of the Christian life, the study of the Holy Scriptures, the necessity and privilege of prayer, the theological and spiritual revival of the Church, as well as the recognition of Christ’s lordship in all areas of life, the wellbeing of the Christian family, the nature of the pastoral ministry, the work of missions, etc.

Drawing from the rich heritage of Reformed literature, PASSAGGIO labors to translate and publish in the Italian language books by the English Puritans, the evangelical preachers of the 18th and 19th centuries, but especially Tom Wells, R.C. Sproul, etc.

PASSAGGIO is also engaged in publishing literature related to the Italian reformers and martyrs of the 16th century. A treatise on the Holy Scriptures by Peter Martyr Vermigli (1499-1562) and a biography of martyr Gofferdo Varaglia (1507-1558) are the first-fruits of this endeavor. The spiritual impact people of God is certainly worth the arduous effort to research and retrieve it from the archives and libraries.

Another important aspect is PASSAGGIO’s annual Conference, usually held in the month of May. The main purpose of these conferences is to focus on major themes of Christian doctrine and life for the benefit of those attending. The following list gives an idea of the themes and speakers of our conferences: The importance of preaching (Hywel Jones), The man of God (Stuart Olyot), Spiritual revival (Joel Beeke), The duties of a pastor (Mark Johnston), The glory of God (Alistair Begg), The true disciple (Mark Dever), Sexuality and the Christian life (David Morris).

PASSAGGIO was begun in 1993 by a group of dedicated Christians in the city of Mantua, in northern Italy. The Name PASSAGGIO, meaning “passage” or “pilgrimage”, was taken from 1 Chronicles 29:15, where David prays: “For we are aliens and pilgrims before You, as were all our fathers”. This verse reminds us that this present world is not our true home, for we are pilgrims (“gente di passaggio”) and as such we should live our earthly passage, following not the ways of the world, but the truths and values of God.

Through the years the ministry of PASSAGGIO has continued to grow, attracting interest and support from other Christians and churches doctrinal position. Its books are distributed throughout the country by means of evangelical bookstores or directly to churches and individuals with whom we have contact.

PASSAGGIO being a non-profit organization, all its proceeds are reinvested in the ministry, whether to pay translators, to print and distribute literature, or to organize conferences. Because of the amount of work yet to be done and the limited funds available, PASSAGGIO welcomes the support of churches and Christians who desire to invest in such a ministry, for the benefit and revival of the Church in Italy and the glory of God.
